Any sign of frogs spawning yet.?

I'm not sure whether I will have any due to my pond being raised of the ground.

I had a quick look out of my bedroom window about 8a.m to check on the weather
and nearly had a heart attack. A BIG Heron was standing on the left hand side of the pond
peering into the water.

In the past they normally fly away at the fist sign of any movement but this one stayed
even after I opened the window.

Only after me swearing at it did it decide to fly away.

It has certainly scared the fish as there is no sign of them now.

Oh well thats nature.

Are you troubled by Herons?

The herons were are a problem early morning but we covered the pond with a net and have not had a visit for the last year or two. We have also had cats sitting, peeRing into the pond.

This year we have got frog spawn in the pond and on the net where the frog has weighed it down into the water.

Nice fish and pond, Manu. Do you keep your pump/filter running in the winter?

Hi Pete
I always leave the filter running but do turn the uva light off in the winter and change the light in the spring.
This way you always have water running and the pond will not freeze right up.
The shock of breaking the ice can kill the fish if done in a small area.

Hi Manu, I have been turning my pump off for the winter. Not sure if I should start it again or leave it until the spring.

I don't see my fish in the winter unless its really mild and then I feed them floating bran sticks.

Thanks for the comments

Due to frequent visits of our local Herons I have modified my pond so that it is completely covered
with plastic netting. The Herons still come down but cannot get a free meal anymore.

Hi micky
I alway's leave the pump running but i do turn the uva light off.
This way there is a hole in the ice at all time's never frozen right up yet.
Only if you break the ice you can shock and kill your fish, mind you a small ball or duck will do the same job.
